Case Study
Gas & Water Mains Diversion
£390,000
Leith St off Princess St, Edinburgh
Scotia Gas Networks & Business Stream
Project Description
This Project involved the laying of 180m of 500mm MDPE Low Pressure Gas Main & 195m of 300mm Ductile Water Main in one of the most heavily pedestrianised and traffic congested streets in Edinburgh.
The Challenge
It was essential that access to the adjacent shops, offices and premises was maintained.
Additionally, this section of Leith Street is very heavily congested with underground utilities.
Our Solution
After initial meeting with both clients, is was agreed that WPS should act as the Principle Contractor and control the worksite.
The Programme of Works was submitted to both SGN & Business Stream and the other stakeholders who were affected by the works. Both traffic & pedestrian management systems were co-ordinated to maintain pedestrian access & walkways and to reduce traffic congestion to a minimum.
The works were carried out under very difficult conditions as some of the buried obstacles uncovered included a lattice of heavy steelwork and concrete (constructed for the old trams) and an old disused underground tunnel.
All utilities were excavated by hand to locate their exact positions and depth and great care was taken to ensure no underground utilities were damaged during excavation works.
Outcome
As WPS laid both the Gas & the Water Mains the Traffic restrictions and inconvenience to all the affected stakeholders was greatly reduced. The vast experience of both the WPS Management & Teams carrying out this very helped deliver this Project safely without any incidents.
